Mike Craig, who runs Unknown Pleasures in Edinburgh, sells albums and singles to music fans all over
And a recent surge in sales in Eastern Europe and Russia has given him his best ever annual sales figures.
Mike said Russian dealers “fight among themselves” to snap up old LPs by bands including Scots rockers Nazareth.
Some Russian sellers have even travelled to his store to buy in bulk.
Mike, who started selling vinyl in 1997, said yesterday: “Everyone is talking about the music industry being in turmoil but we’ve had our best ever year. Business is booming.
“I don’t know exactly why it’s taken off so much this year.
“I think it’s the whole ‘retro’ thing – people love the sleeves and the artwork of LPs.
“It’s not even particularly rare stuff that’s selling so much as bog standard albums by people like Michael Jackson and Meat Loaf.
“The surge in interest from places like Russia has had a huge impact on sales.
“They love their heavy metal and 1970s prog rock and when I list new items, they are fighting among
each other to get the LPs. They go berserk for things like Nazareth.
“We have had Russian punters coming into the shop and buying armfuls of records.”
Although a big fan of indie music, Mike, 50, does not collect vinyl himself these days and admits he has an
“unsentimental” attitude to music.
He said: “I love Joy Division, for instance, but I had no hesitation in selling a copy of their first single which was signed by all band members, including the late Ian Curtis. I think that went for £1400.
“I’ve got around 65,000 records at home but it’s not a collection. It’s all stock.”
